How is typing speed (WPM) measured?
Words per minute is the standard way to measure typing speed. Because real words vary in length, WPM is calculated using a fixed "word" of five characters. Your net WPM counts only the characters you typed correctly, divided by five, divided by the minutes you spent typing. Your raw WPM counts everything you typed including mistakes. The gap between the two tells you how much your errors are slowing you down.
What is a good typing speed?
On a physical keyboard, the average adult types around 35-45 WPM. A speed of 60-70 WPM is considered fast and is comfortable for most office and data-entry jobs, while professional typists often exceed 80-100 WPM. On a mobile phone, speeds are naturally lower - most people type 25-40 WPM with their thumbs, and 50+ WPM on mobile is excellent.
